Albany, NY – June 1, 2011– In recognition of the important role, talents and leadership that a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New York State can provide as a board member for community-based charities, the New York Council of Nonprofits, Inc. (NYCON) and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) are pleased to announce the Eighth Annual Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builders Award.

The award is named in honor of the late Michael H. Urbach, CPA, former partner of Urbach, Kahn and Werlin, former NYS Commissioner of Tax and Finance and Chair of the State Employees federated Appeal, and board leader of a number of charities. Candidates must: 1) be a CPA in good standing and a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants; 2) have served as an Officer on at least 3 different charitable 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofits with service as President/Chair at least once; 3) have demonstrated exemplary board leadership resulting in significant and positive organizational impact including, but not limited to, financial turn-around, growth, and/or organizational re-structuring; and 4) preference will be given to nominees whose board leadership accomplishments have been with community-based charities.

The 2011 award will be formally presented at the Annual Member Meeting of NYCON slated for the afternoon of October 6th at Mohonk Mountain House, New Paltz, New York. The Luncheon will take place during our 10th annual CAMP FINANCE, a financial management conference that provides the very best in knowledge and skill development sessions for fiscal and management staff, as well as board members. Camp Finance will also feature a “Money for Mission” track that will focus on fundraising, marketing, social media and grant-making.

In honor of the late Harold Mandel, a certified public accountant who worked for Urbach, Kahn & Werlin in Albany, NY and retired in West Palm Beach, FL, the 2011 Urbach Honoree has the privilege to award one (1) nonprofit executive of their choice a Camp Finance scholarship in Hal’s name.  In 2009, Mr. Mandel’s family accepted a posthumous Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builder’s Award in his tribute.

NYCON and NYSSCPA would like to recognize The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region’s Michael Urbach Memorial Fund for their contributions towards to the Michael H. Urbach, CPA Community Builder Award.

Michael H. Urbach, CPA

Michael H. Urbach, CPA, a professional accountant who passed away in 2004, demonstrated the true meaning of volunteer leadership, compassion and dedication through extraordinary nonprofit board service. He was a man who promoted and embraced organizational change, no matter how tough the going may be, for the broader interest of those in need and the community at large. Michael was a past president of the Council of Community Services of Northeastern New York, Inc. (now NYCON), Equinox, Inc., Albany Jewish Community Center and St. Peter´s Hospital Associates. He also served as an officer and board member of the United Way of Northeastern, NY, Albany Boys and Girls Club, Hospitality House, Senior Services of Albany and Junior Achievement of the Capital District.   Prior to his retirement in December 2003, Michael was Senior VP-CFO for the New York Power Authority.  From 1995 to 1999, Michael was Commissioner of the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance. Before entering into public service, Michael worked for thirty years as a partner and executive VP of Urbach, Kahn and Werlin, P.C., where he specialized in working with mid-sized business operations and provided consulting services to government entities and officials. In 1997, Michael received the NYSSCPA outstanding CPA in government award. He was recognized for his championing of initiatives that eliminate unnecessary regulation and red tape. He also served as a delegate to the National White House conference for Small Business. 

Harold Mandel, CPA
Harold Mandel, CPA believed in giving back to the community. He was a board member and officer of numerous organizations, including a longtime board member that served on the NYCON board for 15 year. Other organizations he served were Council Services Plus, Capital Repertory Theater Company, Daughter of Sarah Nursing Home Foundation and Historic Cherry Hill Museum House. Harold was also a close friend and colleague of Michael Urbach and was instrumental to the creation of the Urbach Award.  In retirement, Hal continued to volunteer his time to work with nonprofit organizations in Palm Beach County
Mandel retired after 30+ years as a CPA and shareholder (partner) of Urbach, Kahn, and Werlin, P.C. (UKW) in Albany, NY, where he had the responsibility for providing accounting and consulting services to nearly 60 organizations annually. Harold specialized in nonprofit organizations and government entities. He was a member of the NYSSCPA, where he served on the committees on Tax-exempt Organizations, Nonprofit Accounting, and Public School Accounting. He was also a certified government financial manager and a member of the Association of Government Accountants.
