STARTING A NON-PROFIT -- LEGAL

Running a nonprofit is serious business that warrants knowledgeable legal consultation from time to time. Whether it is a personnel matter or a question on conflict of interest, the NYCON provides our member agencies with independent, expert, and low-cost assistance from attorneys who practice exclusively in nonprofit law.

Quick answers to some of the day-to-day questions that arise in your nonprofit are included in your membership at the NYCON. Should a more thorough answer or analysis be necessary you will be billed separately at a very affordable hourly rate. Please note that a Retainer outlining the services to be provided and their associated cost will usually precede all billing unless otherwise agreed upon.

Assistance is available in:

  • The creation or modification of personnel polices, bylaws and other important corporate documents, such as contracts and leases;
  • Assistance in the completion of various Tax Exemption Applications
  • Incorporation and Amendments
  • Advocacy and lobbying regulations
  • Confidentiality and conflict of interest issues
  • Establishing subsidiaries and other related entities
  • Assistance with mergers, consolidations and corporate dissolutions

New groups looking to incorporate as a nonprofit in New York State and to apply for their tax-exempt status (501c(3)) often utilize our services to lead them through these often complex processes, while tenured nonprofits often seek confirmation of their procedures. Please note that that our legal services do not include litigation or client representation. For Representation NYCON´s Endorsed Corporate Partner Law Firm, Watson & West are available to assist you.
