Program Overview
In 2006, a study of 2,000 executive directors, conducted by the Meyer Foundation and CompassPoint Nonprofit Services, noted that 75% of respondents did not plan to be in their current job in five years. NYCON’s Interim Executive Leaders Can Manage
Your Nonprofit’s Leadership Transition.

What is the NYCON Interim Executive Leadership (IEL) Program? The Interim Executive Leadership (IEL) program is designed to help meet the leadership needs of NYCON’s member agencies as significant numbers of nonprofit executives are expected to retire over the next 5 years. Interim Executive Leaders (IELs) trained through our program will provide effective transitional leadership to our member nonprofits to strengthen organizational health and effectiveness during a time of transition. NYCON has developed a pool of highly qualified and experienced Interim Executive Leaders (“IELs”) that are available to meet your Interim Executive Leadership needs.

Consider Hiring a NYCON Interim Executive Leader if your organization:
  • Is operating without an Executive Director/CEO and seeks an IEL to serve as a temporary “placeholder” to maintain agency operations while the Board conducts an ED/CEO search process;
  • Has experienced Executive Director/CEO turnover over the last few years and the agency requires stabilization;
  • Is expecting your Executive Director/CEO to retire or resign, and you require sufficient time to conduct a thorough search process;
  • Is seeking an experienced, qualified nonprofit professional trained in transition management to serve as a “placeholder” to guide the organization through a short-term period of transition.

NYCON Member agencies interested in engaging an IEL are required to contract with NYCON to conduct an IEL Engagement Readiness Review, please contact the program director to submit a request and receive further information.

IEL Program & Placement Details:
NYCON selects and trains a pool of interim executives who, depending on their competencies, availability and location, will be recommended as candidates to our member nonprofits experiencing transition.  NYCON will assess the member nonprofits situation and needs via a mandatory “IEL Engagement Readiness Review”, provide them with up to three (3) candidates from our pool to interview. The member nonprofit will conduct interviews and decide as to whom, if any, they want as interim ED or CEO.  All interim executive leaders that are placed by NYCON will be under an employment contract with ICI, which specializes in employment administration. The member nonprofit will retain NYCON for the IEL services; NYCON will subcontract with ICI for the IEL services. NYCON provides all the necessary assessment, referral, placement, and supportive service arrangements for our member nonprofits. Many member nonprofits will also access additional NYCON services such as search assistance, financial management, legal, board development, etc. In most cases, but not all, interim executives will be working on a part-time schedule, generally three (3) full days per week. The typical engagement will last 3-6 months.

Cost:

Interim Executive Leaders compensation is based on the previous occupant’s salary and the value of mandatory and optional benefits prorated for FTE time spent. Direct expenses, including mileage, may also be reimbursed.  As an employee of ICI, IELs will receive mandatory liability insurance coverage and undergo a criminal background, employment and education verification check.  The Member nonprofit client will be charged the pro-rated cost of the interim executive compensation (including the value of mandatory and optional benefits) plus a 15% fee.
