Proposed Change to State Election Law Might Require Nonprofits to Register as Political Committees
A proposed change to State Election law proposed by Governor Cuomo would require everyone, including non-political social service agencies, to register as political committees if they mention a candidate in a mailing before an election. This requirement would classify routine newsletters, annual reports, news round-ups, and more as partisan political communications. You can read more about this proposed change in the follow op-ed in the Times Union by Michelle Jackson, HSC's Associate Director, and Laura Abel, Senior Policy Counsel at Lawyers Alliance for New York.
