Helpful Websites

  • Mergers, Collaborations, and Partnerships As nonprofits consider strategies for the future, it is not unusual for a board or staff to explore the possibility of collaborating or partnering with another nonprofit or even a for-profit entity. Your nonprofit may actively seek out collaborations and partnerships or be sought after as a potential partner. Before plunging into a potential collaboration or partnership, it is helpful to be familiar with common pitfalls and challenges. The National Council of Nonprofits has assembled some helpful resources to get you started.
  • Nonprofit Mergers and Acquisitions: More Than a Tool for Tough Times The troubled economy has put merging with or acquiring another organization front and center on the radar for the senior managers of many struggling nonprofits. Indeed, a Bridgespan Group poll of nonprofit executive directors found that 20 percent of 117 respondents stated that mergers could play a role in how they respond to the economic downturn.
  • Merging Wisely-Stanford Social Innovative Review  With the economy in turmoil, funders are increasingly pressuring nonprofits to merge. Yet mergers are not always the right path for nonprofits in financial distress. For a healthier nonprofit sector, funders should consider a wider variety of partnership options.

Member Testimonial:

It was a pleasure working with the team from NYCON as Episcopal SeniorLife Communities  and Seniorfirst reviewed affiliation options over a seven month period.  Each organization is large, with multiple affiliate corporations associated with the discussion.

Doug Sauer did a spectacular job facilitating the process, managing contentious moments, and bringing us all to consensus. His patience, wisdom and diligence to process were remarkable.

Working with the Synergy Program of the United Way of Greater Rochester and NYCON was a great experience for Episcopal SeniorLife Communities, improving the services to seniors in the Rochester Community.
