What Nonprofit Executives and Board Members Need to Know About Nonprofit Accounting (Part 1)

Accounting and financial reporting by nonprofit entities differs from that for for-profit entities. In this session, always a popular one at Camp Finance, you will learn all about these differences from a nationally known speaker. This two-part session provides an excellent overview for those new to the nonprofit sector, for nonprofit executives and board members who need “the basics” or for Campers who just want a refresher. Part 1 covers some basic topics, including an introduction to accounting by not-for-profit entities, what makes a not-for-profit entity different from a for-profit entity and accounting for contributions (restrictions, measurement, pledges, donated services and other topics).

Optimizing Communications between Development and Finance

Development and finance departments serve different yet critical functions within not-for-profit organizations. Typically, information flows in one direction — from development to finance. A two-way conversation about recognizing gifts can go a long way to streamline the needs of both departments and enhance the sharing of data. Highlighting key considerations to ensure a more unified approach to recording and reporting giving, we will explore areas including:

  • When a promise is a gift, and when it is not
  • The value of detailed donor communications and recordkeeping
  • What a restriction is versus a condition, and how this can impact the “ask”
  • Considerations about fundraising cost
