Firestorm! Risk Management Strategies for HR Crises
Every nonprofit with paid staff will periodically encounter difficult HR situations and knowing the applicable laws and how to apply them is key to protecting your organization. How an organization responds also has an impact on employee relations, including team morale, so dealing appropriately is critical. Join us for this three-hour interactive session as NYCON’s staff attorneys and HR expert dive into a series of typical real-life scenarios they have heard from nonprofits across New York State. With each situation they will describe the circumstances (without sharing the nonprofit’s name or other revealing details) and review relevant state and federal laws. In an open discussion, they will then discuss how to handle the situations. Audience members will be encouraged to participate, asking questions and sharing their own similar situations – including how they handled the situation and how it worked out. Attendees will hear a variety of scenarios in this session, and in doing so gain knowledge of laws governing typical personnel challenges, and confidence in knowing how to apply best practices in handling such situations. NYCON staff will be present to provide strategic guidance and practical tools to overcome obstacles and achieve your mission goals. Staff will share best practices and new ideas from nonprofits around the state. Participants will engage in group discussion to share their challenges, successes and ways they may have turned those challenges into opportunities. and sharing, providing additional ideas. Building a strong network of peer executive directors, investing in your professional development, and seeking support when needed are all signs of strong leadership, not of weakness.
