Lessons From 9/11: How Funders and Nonprofits Coordinated Recovery 25 Years Ago

After major disasters, relief is often fragmented. There are siloes between leaders, funders have different priorities, and the most vulnerable can fall through the cracks. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As New York marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, join the NYC Preparedness & Recovery Institute in collaboration with Kean University Department of Criminal Justice and Public Affairs, for a look back at how funders and service providers, governments and volunteers came together to provide for the many needs of New Yorkers after 9/11.
The collaboration that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks offers important lessons for disaster response today. With federal support faltering, the time may come when New York City, or another jurisdiction, needs to build a similar model of coordinated relief. Join leaders from that time and current disaster relief professionals for a conversation about the successes and lessons of the post-September 11th response, and what it would take to recreate such a model today.
